Charlie Papazian (nuclear engineer, brewer, lover of pies) founded the holiday in Boulder, Colorado during the 1970s, on his birthday: January 23rd. The holiday hit the mainstream when the American Pie Council claimed it in 1986, and pie lovers everywhere celebrate each and every year.
You might have heard that National Pie Day is March 14th, but that’s actually National Pi Day, for the mathematical constant š¯˛¹. People do tend to eat pie on National Pi Day, as it’s often preferable to doing math.

Ingredients for Grandma’s Old-Fashioned Sweet Potato Pie

Pie Dough Ingredients
- 1 ¼ cups flour
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon granulated sugar
- 4 tablespoons unsalted butter (chilled, in ¼-inch pieces)
- 3 tablespoons vegetable shortening (chilled)
- 4 – 5 tablespoons ice water
Sweet Potato Filling Ingredients
- 2 pounds sweet potatoes
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 3 large eggs
- 2 large egg yolks
- 1 cup sugar
- ½ teaspoon ground nutmeg
- ¼ teaspoon salt
- 2 – 3 tablespoons bourbon
- 1 tablespoon molasses (optional)
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ā…” cup whole milk
- ¼ cup dark brown sugar (packed)
For more flavor, consider cinnamon, ginger or cloves alongside the nutmeg, and top the pie with toasted nuts after it’s baked.

Grandma’s Old-Fashioned Sweet Potato Pie Recipe
Your grandma’s old-fashioned sweet potato pie recipe is probably one of your favorites, and we’re adding it to our favorite recipes, too. Our grandma’s recipe is lost to time, but Kitchen Divas’ Karin and Ken have one we’ve fallen in love with. Here’s a quick peek (check out their full recipe for more):
Making your crust:
- Mix flour, salt and sugar in a food processor and pulse until combined.
- Add ¼-inch chunks of butter and pulse a few more times.
- Add shortening and pulse until the mixture is pale yellow.
- Pour your ice water over the mixture evenly and knead into a 4-5 inch ball.
- Cover and refrigerate for at least 30 minutes (good for up to 2 days).
- Allow to come to room temperature before using.
Baking that sweet potato pie:
- Preheat your oven to 375.
- Place your crust into a pie plate.
- Put a layer of heavy-duty foil over the pie crust.
- Weigh the foil down with dried beans or uncooked rice and bake for 18-20 minutes.
- Remove the foil and weights, then bake until golden brown (8-10 minutes).
- Pierce your sweet potatoes with a fork, place on paper towels, and microwave for 5 minutes.
- Flip each potato over and cook until tender (another 5 minutes or so).
- Allow potatoes to cool.
- Cut each potato in half and scrape the inside into a bowl.
- Add butter and mash until only small lumps remain.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together eggs, egg yolks, sugar, nutmeg and salt.
- Add bourbon, molasses, vanilla and milk.
- Slowly add the egg mixture to sweet potatoes.
- Place your partially baked crust back in the oven until warm (5 minutes or so).
- Sprinkle brown sugar across the pie crust.
- Pour sweet potato mixture into your pie crust.
- Bake for 45 minutes.
- Allow to cool to room temperature before slicing and serving.
